The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) and Iranian-backed Syrian factions had deployed large reinforcements in the northern countryside of Aleppo, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported on June 29.

According to the London-based monitoring group, the reinforcements included dozens of battle tanks, howitzers and truck-mounted heavy machines guns as well as hundreds of troops.

“The reinforcements arrived in the northern countryside of Aleppo just before midnight on Tuesday [June 28], and entered in three batches. Each batch included around 14 4×4 military vehicles, personnel carriers and hundreds of heavily armed troops,” the group said in its report.

The SOHR said that the reinforcements were deployed at Minaq Air Base, along the frontline with the the Turkish-occupied town of al-Bab and along the frontline to the south of the Turkish-occupied area of Afrin.

The SAA and its allies have deployed large reinforcements in the northern Aleppo countryside since late May. Most of these reinforcements were deployed in areas jointly held with the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) to deter the Turkish military and its proxies who are currently preparing to launch a new operation in Syria.

The norther Aleppo countryside is expected to be the focal point of any new Turkish operation against the SDF. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan confirmed this himself when he recently announced that the main targets of the upcoming operation in Syria will be the towns of Tell Rifaat and Manbij, which are both located in the region.

A recent report by Al-Monitor revealed that Kurdish, pro-government and Iranian-backed formations had established a joint operations room called the “North Thunderbolt” in the northern Aleppo countryside coordinate against the Turkish military and its proxies.

Russia has already warned Turkey that it could find itself in a confrontation with the SAA and its allies if it launches a new military operation in SDF against the SDF. Ankara does not appear to be too worried about this.

Perhaps Ankara should get together with Damascus and Tehran to discuss and resolve the Kurdish question rather than invading Syria and giving the US/nato/isreali regimes a reason for being.
Sectarian conflict can be caused anywhere, as the Turkish admin already knows.

In the longer scheme of things Ankara may well come to rely on its neighbours because its nato membership is a bit rocky. The strategic position of Turkey has always been its only bargaining chip.
