A series of Israeli strikes that hit the city of Palmyra in the eastern Homs countryside on November 20 killed 36 people and left more than 50 others wounded, the Syrian Arab News Agency reported.

“At approximately 1:30 p.m. today, the Israeli enemy launched an air attack from the direction of the al-Tanf area, targeting a number of buildings in the city of Palmyra in the Syrian desert, which led to the martyrdom of 36 people [and] the injury of more than 50 others,” the state-run news agency said, quoting a military official.

The unnamed official added that the strikes also caused significant damage to the targeted buildings and surrounding area.

Al-Tanf, which is located on the border with both Iraq and Jordan, is controlled by the United States, which claims that its troops and allies are present there to counter the remnants of ISIS. The Israeli warplanes that launched the strikes on Palmyra reportedly came from the direction of Jordan.

Israel escalated its attacks on Syria after the outbreak of the war in the Palestinian enclave of the Gaza Strip in October of last year, targeting Syrian military sites as well as personnel of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, Lebanon’s Hezbollah and other factions of the so-called Axis of Resistance.

After expanding operations against Hezbollah in Lebanon in September, the Israeli military said that it will work to stop the supply of any weapons from Iran to Hezbollah through the Lebanese-Syrian border.

Just a few hours after the deadly strikes on Palmyra, Syrian pro-opposition media reported additional Israeli strikes against vehicles belonging to Hezbollah close to the town of Ras Maara which is located in the western Damascus countryside some seven kilometers away from the border with Lebanon.
