A fighter of an Iran-backed armed faction was killed late on June 21 when a suspected United States strike hit the Syrian-Iraqi border.
The strike was initially reported by the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a London-base pro-opposition monitoring group, which said that a blast was heard near the eastern Syrian town of al-Bukamal right on the border with Iraq. Several videos showing the blast were posted to social networks.
Later, Iraq’s Kata’ib Sayyid al-Shuhadakl mourned one of its fighters, saying in a statement that he was killed when a “treacherous American strike” hit his vehicle while on a reconnaissance patrol along the border with Syria.
Kata’ib Sayyid al-Shuhadakl is a key faction of the Islamic Resistance in Iraq (IRI), a coalition that emerged after the outbreak of the Israeli war on the Gaza Strip last October and began launching attacks against U.S. forces in Iraq and Syria as well as targets in Israel.
The coalition suspended attacks against American forces last February after the death of three American troops in a drone strike on a base in Jordan, reportedly upon a request from Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. However, it escalated attacks against Israel starting from March.
Kata’ib Sayyid al-Shuhadakl is also a faction of the Iraqi Popular Mobilization Forces, which maintains a strong presence on both sides of the Syrian-Iraqi border in order to counter the remnants of the ISIS terrorist group.
If the U.S. was indeed behind the strike near al-Bukamal, the IRI could resume strikes against American forces in Iraq and Syria.
Nevertheless, it is also very possible that the strike was carried out by Israel, who was blamed for several strikes that targeted the Syrian-Iraqi border after the outbreak of the war in Gaza.
