The past night witnessed a significant surge in aerial attacks, with both Russian and Ukrainian militaries launching waves of drones and missiles deep into each other’s territories. While Russian strikes traditionally targeted military and energy infrastructure across Ukraine, Ukrainian forces conducted a large-scale combined attack using missiles and drones, focusing on the lost regions, Crimea, and even striking deep into Russia’s hinterland, including a devastating attack on an air defense factory in Izhevsk, over 1,300 km from the frontlines, causing civilian casualties.
Last night, the ratio of the number of attacking Russian and Ukrainian missiles and UAVs was surprisingly in favor of Ukraine: 60 Ukrainian UAVs were shot down overnight in the Russian rear regions, against 52 Russian Geranium/Gerbera UAVs that targeted Ukraine. After the record-breaking night attack the day before yesterday LINK, the Russian military took a break with massive raids, but the Ukrainian military, on the contrary, launched a massive combined strike in Russia.
Ukrainian Strikes: Expanding Reach and Civilian Casualties
Ukrainian forces launched one of their most extensive attacks in recent weeks, employing reportedly Western-supplied Storm Shadow/SCALP EG missiles alongside numerous kamikaze drones. Retreating on the frontlines, the Armed Forces of Ukraine have taken up their old bloody business – pounding the lost Donetsk and Lugansk, which bore the brunt of the strikes, with Western missiles striking a market in Donetsk, killing at least one civilian woman and wounding several others. Fragments recovered at the scene confirmed the use of Storm Shadow missiles, known for their precision and long-range capabilities. As a result of the attack, the local marked burned down and a building nearby caught fire. According to Ukrainian reports, the target was the headquarters of the 8th Combined Arms Army.
When the center of Donetsk was burning, Ukrainian drones swarmed Luhansk, hitting civilian vehicles and infrastructure in the city. Fires broke out in the city. More strikes in the region resulted in the death of at least an 18-year-old, after his car was attacked by Ukrainian drone near Petrovskoe, and severe injuries to multiple other civilians.
Crimea remained one of key targets, with Ukrainian forces reportedly recorded launching Storm Shadow missiles toward the peninsula. The Russian military is yet to report on interception of any missiles but the Defense Ministry confirmed the destruction of 17 UAVs in this direction at night.
The most audacious Ukrainian strikes, however, occurred far beyond the frontlines. Drones penetrated deep into Russian territory, reaching Saratov Oblast (over 1,000 km from Ukraine) and Izhevsk in Udmurtia (1,500 km away). In the latter, two “Lyutyi” drones struck the “Kupol” electromechanical plant, a critical producer of short-range air defense systems like the Tor missile complex, according to other reports the plant was producing UAVs. The attack killed at least three civilians and injured at least 35 others, marking one of Ukraine’s farthest-reaching drone operations to date.
Izhevsk is located 1300 kilometers away from Ukrainian frontlines, but only 600 kilometers from the border of Kazakhstan.
It is noteworthy that the day before Moscow declared it was discussing the flight of Ukrainian drones over the territory of Kazakhstan with Astana. According to the Russian Foreign Ministry, several dozen Ukrainian drones flew over the territory of Kazakhstan on June 19 and 20 “with the aim of launching strikes in Russia.”
“Our Kazakh friends have assured us that they are taking the necessary measures in their contacts with the Ukrainian side to put an end to this practice,” Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said.
The representative of the Foreign Ministry of Kazakhstan then denied information about the flight of drones over the territory of his country towards Russia.
On June 19th, Kazakh media reported that residents of the Karakiyansky district of the Mangistau region of Kazakhstan discovered an unknown drone near the Bolashak border railway station. The police began checking, noting that the device was found in a remote area, far from populated areas. On June 22, fragments of an “unidentified object with a motor” were found in Atyrau region. Objects similar to UAV debris were also found in March in the West Kazakhstan region.
Russian Strikes: Geran Swarms and Infrastructure Destroyed
After a brief pause following a record-breaking attack earlier in the week, Russian forces continued daily strikes with 52 Geran-type drones launched from multiple directions, according to the Ukrainian military. Ukrainian air defenses allegedly intercepted 47 of them, but several still struck critical infrastructure.
Over the past day, multiple Russian strikes targeted front-line regions, including Sumy, Kharkiv, and Kherson, with Iskander-M missiles hitting Snihurivka in the Mykolaiv region. Meanwhile, in Kryvyi Rih and Pokrovsk, Russian drones struck industrial sites, with local reports noting prolonged detonations after impact.
A series of strikes pounded the city of Zaporozhie. The footage confirmed a power substation burning. The locals confirmed strikes on some industrial facilities that triggering secondary explosions indicating the presence of ammunition stockpiles. Ukrainian officials are regularly accused of irresponsibly storing military supplies near civilian areas.

shouldn’t it be obvious that there is no point to limiting the in theater operational capacity of the russian military as ukraine and nato interpret this as “weakness”
you have some insight into the mindset of the us and nato leadership?
