Six militants were killed by Russian security forces during a special counter-terrorism operation in the region of Ingushetia.
Officers from the Federal Security Service surrounded the militants’ hideout at a multi-storey residential building in the Karabulak city late on March 2. The militants then engaged in a firefight with the security officers, with sporadic gunfire and grenade explosions heard late into the night, according to videos from the scene.
During the fierce firefight, all residents of the surrounded building as well as nearby buildings were evacuated by security forces.
The firefight came to an end early on March 3. The National Antiterrorism Committee later said in a statement that a total of six militants had been neutralized in the operation, and that their identities had been established preliminarily. It added that they were supporters of ISIS, which is designed as a terrorist group in Russia.
The committee noted in is statement that there had been no casualties among civilians or law enforcement officers during the operation.
At least one of the militants who were killed in the operation was reportedly on a federal wanted list in connection with a deadly terrorist raid on a police outpost last year.
Ingushetia, the smallest region in Russia, lies between North Ossetia and Chechnya. It has a population of about half a million people.
