Israel’s Shin Bet security agency confirmed on August 29 that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s son Yair was urgently returned to Israel from Miami after a significant threat to his life was identified.
The agency’s announcement followed reports earlier this week that Yair Netanyahu was the target of an Iranian assassination plot in December of last year while living in Florida.
In a statement, the Shin Bet said “There was a significant threat to harm Yair Netanyahu, and in light of this and after an assessment, a decision was made to urgently extract him along with his security team and return him to Israel.”
Channel 12 reported that to carry out the operation, the Shin Bet transferred some agents to Miami from New York, where they had been assigned to President Isaac Herzog during a visit. Yair is believed to have remained in Israel since the extraction.
The Hebrew-language report did not detail the nature of the threat or identify those behind it. However, the United States outlet Newsmax reported earlier in the week that intelligence agencies assessed Iranian agents were “on the ground” in Miami conducting surveillance on his movements.
Before that, Netanyahu defended the security provided to his sons in a Channel 14 interview, saying that without it, would-be assassins “would succeed.”
Iranian media have repeatedly threatened Netanyahu and his families following the 12-day war last year. The threats expanded to President Donald Trump and his family after the February 28 assassination of former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and family members during opening strikes of the U.S.-Israeli war on the Islamic Republic.
Yair, an activist and podcaster, had lived in the Miami area for much of the past few years. His lifestyle there and the state-funded security detail assigned to him drew repeated public scrutiny in Israel. Critics especially questioned his extended stay in the U.S. after Hamas’s October 7 attack of 2023.
He has maintained a prominent and often combative social media presence, frequently commenting on Israeli politics and criticizing his father’s opponents, government critics and members of the media.
