On September 4, a senior Yemeni military commander allied with the Saudi-led coalition was assassinated in the southern Yemeni city of Aden.

The commander, Major General Musa Mohsen al-Mashdali, was killed when an explosive device ripped through his Toyota Hilux pickup near the al-Aumdah hotel in the northern part of Aden. The commanders’ bodyguard was wounded in the attack.

Maj. Gen. al-Mashdali, known as “Abu Ottoman,” was the commander of Saudi-backed forces on al-Hazmiyah front in the central Yemeni province of al-Bayda.

No group has claimed responsibility for the assassination of al-Mashdali, so far. However, some Yemeni sources accused the Southern Transitional Council of orchestrating the assassination. The UAE-backed council was allegedly behind attacks that targeted some of his opponents in Aden in the last few years.

It is also possible that al-Mashdali was assassinated by the Houthis (Ansar Allah), the main foe of the Saudi-led coalition in Yemen.

ISIS, whose cells are known to be present in Aden, may be also behind the assassination of al-Mashdali. The terrorist group carried out similar attacks in the past.

The assassination of al-Mashdali highlights poor security measures in Yemeni areas held by the Saudi-led coalition and its proxies. The incident was a real blow to the coalition.
