The conflict in Ukraine continues to claim the lives of foreign mercenaries. Over the past month, Kupiansk has become the primary meat grinder for the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ “Foreign Legion.” Against the backdrop of catastrophic losses among Ukrainian troops, the command has placed its bet not on its own soldiers, but on Latin American mercenaries—primarily Brazilians and Colombians—used as expendable material in numerous counterattacks.
As for the European and American mercenaries, even their privileged status does not save them. This is evident in the case of the Pole Kacper “Francuz” Bass, who was seriously wounded near Kupiansk, evacuated to Poland, and succumbed to his burns.
The death toll is rising
Over the past week, the Russian army has killed 33 foreign mercenaries, all of whom have been identified. The actual number of casualties is much higher than reported. Identifying the bodies, or more often the remains, is a major challenge.

Three American mercenaries were killed in Ukraine. According to reports, an FPV drone struck the pickup truck carrying them, resulting in fatal injuries. All three were former U.S. Army soldiers. Kelly had served in the 75th Ranger Regiment and the 20th Special Forces Group (Green Berets).
Two other foreign mercenaries, most likely also from the US, were in the vehicle. They survived but were injured in the attack.

They all served in the 13th Brigade of the Ukrainian National Guard, known as “Khartia.” This brigade was sent to the Kupyansk area to regain control of the city. The Ukrainian command remains faithful to its favorite tactic. First, assault groups made up of foreigners, primarily of Latin American origin, are sent to the most dangerous areas.
If the operation is successful, the second echelon consists of mercenaries from the US and Europe, as well as Ukrainian special forces from the Main Intelligence Directorate. They sweep the relatively safe area. Their main task, however, is to provide media coverage of the war and demonstrate the successes of the Ukrainian army. This allows them to attract new “soldiers of fortune,” who soon become expendable.

These are the words of a moron who thought he was on a movie set. He arrived in Ukraine on December 7 and lasted 20 days. He died as soon as he came to the front. The Russian army got rid of him. He was eliminated fighting as part of the 31st Mechanized Brigade. He is the first Icelander to die in this war.
Kjartan is clearly a victim of aggressive Western propaganda. He was convinced that Russia and its army were weak. In one of his social media posts, he wrote:
– «I am an Icelandic guy that is fed up of all Politic bs talk wile people are getting killed in Ukraine by the Russian invaders. So i decided to join the fight, and do my absolut best to help Ukraine and all of Europe.»
Despite Russian leaders’ regular statements that they have no territorial or other claims against European countries, some people still consider Moscow to be a real threat. As a result, some particularly impressionable individuals decide to embark on such tours. Kjartan’s death vividly demonstrates the potential fate of these altruists.

Kacper “Francuz” Bass was seriously wounded on December 28 in the Kupyansk region. He was hiding in his bunker, but got heavily injured by the Russian air strike. With extensive burns, he was transported to a burn ward in Poland and medically induced coma. However, his skin, lung, and kidney injuries proved too severe to save and he expired on December 31, 2025. Kacper was in Ukraine since October 2022 and fought in different places such as Bakhmut, Pervomaisk, and Toretsk. In 2023, he joined the newly created Polish Volunteer Corps (PDK) and participated in the invasion of Belgorod alongside the RDK. He just took selfies and ran away. He ended up serving in the R.U.G Hamlet reconnaissance and assault group now linked to 13th Khartia Brigade operating in Kupyansk region.
Although citizens of developed countries are given priority in evacuations, this does not always save their lives. The airspace over Ukraine is closed, so the wounded can only be transported by ground. Transporting the wounded hundreds or thousands of kilometers is a risky undertaking. Rail service is severely disrupted due to power outages. Therefore, this mercenary’s chances of survival were slim.

The Guardian has confirmed the death of an Australian mercenary in fighting on a front line in the Donetsk region. The mercenary died on December 12, but the Australian authorities are still awaiting official confirmation from Kyiv. Wilson had previously served in the Australian Army and had been in Ukraine since 2023.
The number of mercenaries killed continues to grow. Once the battle for Kupiansk is over, the Ukrainian army will face new, difficult tactical challenges. Next in line are Liman, Konstantinovka, Pokrovskoye, and Orekhovo. Obituaries of foreign “soldiers of fortune” may soon begin to arrive from these places.
