Security forces eliminated 2 ISIS militants in the town of Kolchugino in Vladimir Oblast (a region in central Russia) on May 22.

According to the National Anti-Terrorism Committee, the eliminated militants were supporters of a foreign terrorist group. They were in contact with emissaries outside Russia and preparing a terrorist attack in a public space.

The operation to eliminate militants started at 00:35 local time. Security forces surrounded the building, in which militants were hiding, and evacuated civilians from the area.

The militants resisted to arrest and were eliminated on the site. Security personnel seized weapons and ammunition, which were belonging to the eliminated militants.

It should be noted that in the recent time, Russia counter-terrorism forces had to start employing approaches of their Chinese counterparts. Security operations often lead to the elimination of terrorist groups’ members.

Special services consciously avoid detaining rankers of terrorist groups. This is linked with the complex and often liberal legal system of Russia, the lack of penal infrastructure and the fact that members of terrorist groups often have foreign citizenshi [a notable part of them is from Central Asian states].
