On February 11, the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) announced that its special forces, known as the YAT, neutralized a cell of ISIS in the eastern countryside of Syria’s Deir Ezzor in a joint operation with the United States-led coalition.

In a statement, the Kurdish-led group said that the cell, which was based in al-Suwar district, was working to “support and supply other cells of the terrorist group with weapons and military equipment and was planning to carry out suicide operations aimed at destabilizing the security and stability of the region.”

“After cornering the cell in its hideout; Our units appealed to them to surrender, but they refused, and started shooting at our fighters, which necessitated a response, and as a result two of the terrorist cell’s members were killed,” the statement reads.

The SDF said that its fighters seized assault rifles, handguns, hand grenades, communication devices, money and one explosive belt from the cell’s hideout.

The London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported the death of an Iraqi commander of ISIS and one of his Syrian guards in a joint operation by the coalition and the SDF in the eastern Deir Ezzor countryside on February 10. This was likely the same operation announced by the SDF.

With support from the U.S.-led coalition, the SDF intensified its operations against ISIS cells in northern and eastern Syria this year. The group has already conducted two large-scale counter-terrorism operations in al-Hasakah and Raqqa. Despite this, ISIS cells are still fairly active in the region.
