On October 29, scores of people were reportedly killed or wounded in twin car bomb attacks targeting the education ministry in the Somali capital, Mogadishu.
Two booby-trapped cars were detonated minutes apart near the ministry building, which is located in the busy Zobe junction. Gun fire was heard after the blasts.
A police officer guarding the ministry told The Associated Press he saw at least 12 bodies and more than 20 people wounded.
Police spokesman Sadik Dudishe did not give an official count of the casualties. However, he told reporters at a press briefing that the quick response of security forces prevented the attackers from reaching their intended target. According to the spokesman, the deadly attack is currently being investigated.
“The ruthless terrorists killed mothers. Some of them died with their children trapped on their backs,” has said, adding the attackers had targeted “students and other civilians.”
There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack, but the al-Qaeda-affiliated Harakat al-Shabaab al-Mujahideen routinely carries out such bombings in Somalia. Earlier this month, the terrorist group claimed responsibility for an attack on a hotel in the port city of Kismayo that killed nine people and wounded 47 others.
The twin bombing in Mogadishu came less than a week after a United States drone strike hit terrorists of al-Shabaab. The terrorists, two of whom were killed, were attacking Somali National Army forces near Buulobarde, a city located well over 200 kilometers to the north of the capital.
The attack also occurred on a day when the Somali president, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, Prime Minister, Hamza Abdi Barre, and other senior officials were meeting to discuss combating the terrorist group.
With al-Shabaab still in control of large parts of Somalia’s countryside, the security situation in the war-torn country will not likely improve any time soon.
