Russia’s Security Zone In Sumy And Kharkiv Is Growing (Videos)

On January 14, the Russian military secured another settlement in Sumy along the border, all while further expanding its control near the border in Kharkiv.

The capture of Komarivka, located right on Sumy’s border with the Russian region of Kursk, by the Severe [North] Group of Forces was announced by the Russian Ministry of Defense, with other sources reporting that the attack on the settlement was led by the 80th Motor Rifle Division.

“Artillery crews and FPV drone teams eliminated with precise strikes the AFU (Armed Forces of Ukraine) main pockets of resistance, firing positions, dugouts, ammunition caches, and reserves,” the ministry said in a statement.

“As a result of the heavy fire of Russian units, Ukrainian servicemen were forced to retreat,” it added.

With the settlement fully secured, Russian troops will likely advance west along the border, towards Kharkivka. Fighting is already being reported there.

The ministry also noted in its statement that the Sever Group of Forces has been advancing “into the depth of enemy’s defense” not just in Sumy, but also in Kharkiv -which borders the Russian region of Belgorod-, on a daily basis to fulfill the task of creating a “security zone” along the border.

“Assault detachments push the enemy out of settlements and fortified positions, capture trophies, and take AFU militants prisoner,” it said.

Recent gains by the Sever Group of Forces along the border in Kharkiv were mainly to the direction of the city of Vovchansk.

Russian troops advanced to the south and west of Liman, which is located to the southwest of Volchansk. The troops also advanced inside Staritsa, which is located to the west of the city. The settlement has not yet been fully secured, however. Kiev forces are still fighting there.

Just like Komarivka in Sumy, the advance around Vovchansk was facilitated by intense artillery strikes and a series of drone attacks.

The Russian military’s recent operations along the border in Sumy and Kharkiv show that Kiev forces are losing their combat capabilities in both regions. The forces are no longer capable of defending the border line. The Ukrainian defense pasture will likely get even weaker in coming months.
