Several videos showing Russian troops using the state-of-the-art Yolka interceptor to take down Ukrainian drones in the special military zone surfaced online in recent weeks which suggest that the mass production of the system may have begun.
The videos, the latest of which was posted to social networks on April 5, show at least six multi rotor and fixed-wing drones being intercepted by Yolka interceptors.
The Yolka features an advanced guidance system with a fire-and-forget feature. The system, very likely optical, is said to incorporate artificial intelligence to detect and track the intended aerial target after launch with zero input from the operator.
The interceptor can accelerate to 250 kilometers per hour, has a maximum range of three kilometers, and an engagement altitude of two kilometers.
Instead of carrying a warhead, the Yolka uses a hit-to-kill method, meaning it brings down its target kinetically by directly smashing into it.
As seen in the recent videos, the Yolka is typically launched from a light handheld device. However, a remotely-controlled launch system with an electro-optical targeting system was showcased before. The system can carry at least two interceptors.
Counter-drone systems like the Yolka are cheaper, more simple to produce and easier to use than traditional anti-aircraft missiles. The Russian military expanded the use of such systems in recent months, and will likely incorporate them into its air defense network in the near future.
