The Kub-SM mobile reconnaissance and strike system designed to launch a swarm of loitering munition is ready for preliminary testing, Kalashnikov Group’s CEO Alan Lushnikov told reporters on May 22.
“The system is fully ready for preliminary testing, so we are confident that we will obtain some results very shortly,” he said.
The Kalashnikov Group first unveiled the new Kub-SM system at the IDEX-2025 international arms exhibition and conference in the United Arab Emirates last year.
The system, shown in official renderings mounted on a 6×6 armored truck, can carry up to 16 transport-launch containers. It deploys a mixed swarm: 14 loitering munitions each armed with a warhead weighing five kilograms and two reconnaissance drones that act as data relays with parachute recovery.
The loitering munitions and reconnaissance drones are launched from the truck using gas-dynamic charges for rapid successive firing.
The range of the system is reported to be up to 45 kilometers, with both loitering munitions and reconnaissance drones capable of flying at an altitude of 2,5 kilometers with speeds up to 100 kilometers per hours.
The Kub-SM system was designed to engage unarmored and lightly armored vehicles, command posts of divisions, battalions, batteries, and personnel wearing body armor.
It can also be used to attack air defense and anti-missile defense sites, electronic reconnaissance and electronic warfare systems such as air traffic control radars, counter-battery radars, and ground reconnaissance radars. Additionally, it can target rear support facilities, like drone launch sites, and aircraft or helicopters located outside shelters at airfields.
The Kub-SM will provide the Russian military with a highly-maneuverable all-in-one reconnaissance and strike swarm solution. The latest remarks by Kalashnikov CEO indicate that the system will begin tests this year, and could enter service soon after.
