A new variant of Russia’s Geran-5 jet-powered attack drone has received an electro-optical navigation system designed to compare terrain with maps stored in its memory, Russian military bloggers revealed on September 27.
The variant, identified as the “Geran-5 K5-K,” is reportedly equipped with a system called “Susanin”. The system navigates by matching the terrain observed by the drone with reference maps loaded before the mission. This not only improves the accuracy of the drone, but also makes it more immune to jamming.

The K5-K also features a redesigned fuselage, with the combination of changes reportedly allowing it to reach a higher speed than earlier versions of the Geran-5.
The reported upgrade comes days after footage emerged showing an earlier modification of the jet-powered drone. That version featured larger vertical stabilizers and a revised engine arrangement, with the engine moved inside the fuselage and an air intake installed on the upper surface.

The Geran-5 is considerably larger than other Geran-type drones. It is about 6 meters long, with a wingspan of up to 5.5 meters. Its speed is reported to be roughly 450 to 600 kilometers per hour, and its warhead is estimated at about 90 kilograms, while claimed range figures have varied from roughly 600 kilometers to as much as 1,000 kilometers depending on the configuration and source.
The drone was first publicly unveiled during Russia’s Victory Day coverage on May 9, although Ukrainian intelligence had reported its use against Ukraine earlier in the year.
The successive modifications suggest continued development of the Geran-5, with changes focused on its navigation, propulsion and aerodynamic design.
