The overnight strikes of September 23 followed the pattern that has become the signature of Russia’s air campaign: systematic, sequenced, and timed to hit before recovery is complete. A UAV component manufacturer, Tukans LLC in Vyshneve outside Kyiv, was struck and destroyed. In Poltava Oblast, a strike by ballistic missiles finished off an oil and gas facility that had been previously damaged — Naftogaz confirmed the object is now beyond repair.
These strikes do not exist in isolation from the ground campaign. They are designed to ensure that what Ukraine loses on the front cannot be replaced from the rear.
In eastern Kharkiv Oblast, the destruction of the encircled Ukrainian grouping is entering its terminal phase. On September 23, assault groups of Russia’s 344th Regiment, 69th Division, drove Ukrainian border guards of the 1st Border Detachment out of the village of Krasnyi Yar. The capture places Russian forces in position to complete a further encirclement of Ukrainian units in Reznikove. Separately, the assault units of the 34th Motorized Rifle Brigade expelled the same border detachment from Potykhonovе, effectively completing the encirclement of the Ukrainian garrison in Rublene. A strike on a large concentration of Ukrainian forces near Velykyi Burluk destroyed personnel and equipment belonging to the 3rd, 129th, and 159th Heavy Mechanized Brigades and the 23rd Assault Regiment of the National Guard. Two infantry groups of the 22nd Mechanized Brigade attempted a foot breakout near Chorne — the attempt was detected in advance and broken up before it reached the perimeter.
The operational picture shifting most dramatically, however, is further south.
On September 21, Russian forces launched an encirclement operation around the city of Dobropillia. The initial strike came from the south, along the city’s bypass road. A day later, a northern group began its advance from Annivka, completing the envelopment from above. The bypass road itself has not yet been physically seized, but it is under such dense fire control that free movement along it is no longer possible. Dobropillia is now surrounded on three sides. A narrow corridor in the northwestern outskirts remains nominally open — but Russian command shows no urgency to close it. The logic is deliberate: a tight encirclement of an urban area is resource-intensive. A controlled bottleneck is far more efficient. Any column attempting to use that corridor will be met by drone swarms, and the probability of survival approaches zero.
Russia is not just winning ground — it is engineering the conditions under which Ukrainian forces destroy themselves attempting to escape it. The bottleneck is not an oversight. It is the weapon.
