Chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces Valery Gerasimov
The losses of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) since the beginning of the special operation amount to about one million killed and wounded, Chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces Valery Gerasimov said at a briefing for foreign military attaches.
“The enemy’s losses since the beginning of the special operation amount to about one million dead and wounded,” Gerasimov stressed.
Earlier, the head of the Russian defence ministry, Andrei Belousov, gave similar figures. According to the Defence Ministry, the AFU lost almost a million people during the entire period of the special operation. These are those who were killed, captured or wounded in the period from the beginning of 2022 to the end of 2024, making them unfit for further participation in combat operations. This figure does not include Ukrainian servicemen who have suffered minor injuries that will allow them to return to duty after treatment.
During the same period, the AFU lost some 20,000 tanks and combat vehicles, more than 19,500 artillery pieces and over 1,500 rocket launchers.
According to the Russian Defence Ministry, in the Kursk region alone the AFU lost over 42,000 servicemen, some of whom were captured, over 1,800 tanks and combat vehicles, over 350 artillery pieces, mortars and multiple rocket launchers.
For the whole of 2024, the losses of the Ukrainian army were the highest, accounting for more than 50 per cent of the total number of dead, wounded and captured AFU servicemen for the entire period of the conflict.
At the same time, since the beginning of the Russian special operation, the West has supplied the Ukrainian armed forces with more than 6,400 tanks and armoured vehicles, more than 1,700 surface-to-air missile launchers, 280 multiple rocket launchers and 1,800 field artillery guns.
The Kiev regime has also received more than 150 helicopters and planes and some 40,000 foreign-made drones.
More than 30 countries are supplying military equipment. The main contributors are the US, the UK, Germany, France and Denmark.
Financial aid to Ukraine from Western countries has totalled more than $350 billion, of which $170 billion has gone to the needs of the Ukrainian armed forces.
Despite the huge amount of aid and the actual direct involvement of NATO countries in the armed conflict, in 2024 the Russian army ‘liberated more than 190 settlements and took control of some 4,500 square kilometres of territory’.
