The Russian military is reported to have made more gains in the directions of Dnepropetrovsk and Zaporozhye as of October 1.
In a statement, the Russian Ministry of Defense confirmed that the Vostok [East] Group of Forces had taken over Verbove in Dnepropetrovsk.
The attack on the settlement was led by the 36th Guards Combined Arms Army, according to the ministry, which said that Russian troops took control over ten square kilometres of territory.
“Servicemen of the Vostok Group of Forces continue to engage in combat, thus pushing the enemy from fortified positions and liberating the territory of Zaporozhye and Dnepropetrovsk regions,” the ministry added.
The Vostok Group of Forces will likely push further to the west towards Vyshneve. To support an attack on the town, Russian troops are already working to expand their control to the south of Verbove, advancing to the west of Kalynivske and Novohryhorivka, which is located in Zaporozhye.
The Russian military also appears to be preparing to develop its operations in another part of Dnepropetrovsk. Troops are reportedly already working to expand their bridgehead across the Vovcha River in Ivanivka, which is located far to the northeast of Verbove. A breakthrough in this area could threaten Ukrainian defenses in the east around Novopavlivka, as well as to the west around Havrylivka.
Meanwhile in Zaporozhye, the Vostok Group of Forces has reportedly stormed Poltavka from the eastern direction. Heavy clashes with Kiev forces are taking place in the key settlement, with initial reports suggesting that Russian troops have managed to establish a foothold in the eastern part after capturing several buildings.
The Russian attack on Poltavka will draw in Ukrainian reinforcements from other areas in Zaporozhye, possibly weakening defense lines all the way up to Verbove.
Further to the west in Zaporozhye, the Vostok Group of Forces continues to battle Kiev forces near Stepnohirsk. While Russian troops have not made any new gains there, the other side seems completely incapable of conducting any counterattacks.
According to the Russian MoD, the Vostok Group of Forces inflicted heavy losses on Kiev forces in Dnepropetrovsk and Zaporozhye over the last 24 hours.
“The AFU (Armed Forces of Ukraine) losses amounted to up to 315 troops, one armoured fighting vehicle, and 11 motor vehicles,” the ministry said in its daily briefing.
In general, the defensive posture of Ukraine in Dnepropetrovsk and Zaporozhye appears to be getting weaker by the day. Russian breakthroughs are to be expected in these two directions, although a major collapse of Kiev forces there remains unlikely.
