The Russian military has intensified strikes on the key city of Huliaipole and its outskirts in Zaporozhye likely in preparation of a large-scale assault, videos from December 5 and previous days show.

In the last few days, the Vostok [East] Group of Forces, which leads operations in this direction, captured the last two settlements to the east of Huliaipole, Zelenyi Hai and Vysoke, from Kiev forces.

The group also broke through Ukrainian defenses along the Haichur River to the north of the city, capturing Dobropillya and storming Varvarivka. Fierce fighting is currently taking place in the latter, with preliminary reports indicating that at least the northern part of the large settlement has been already secured.

In addition, there has been reports of increased activities by the Vostok Group of Forces near Marfopil, which suggests that the group is working to expand its control to the south of Huliaipole.

It’s worth noting that President Vladimir Putin was informed during a visit to a frontline command center on November 30 that the operation to “liberate” Huliaipole had begun, with street fighting already underway inside the city. Operations by Russian reconnaissance groups begin in the eastern and southern part of the city a few days earlier.

Putin “gave new directives to provide the troops with everything necessary for combat operations during the coming winter” during the meeting, according to presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov.

Several formations from the Vostok Group of Forces’ 5th, 29th, 35th and 36th armies are currently working to soften Ukrainian defenses to the south, east and north of Huliaipole, using mainly drones in addition to more traditional artillery means.

The drone units of the 57th Guards Motorized Rifle Brigade of the 5th Army and the 38th Guards Motorized Rifle Brigade of the 35th Army have been especially very active in this regard, targeting not only defenses but also key supply routes leading to the city.

Meanwhile, the Russian Aerospace Forces has stepped up its strikes on Ukrainian positions inside Huliaipole, mainly employing guided glide bombs.

Facing intense strikes, Ukrainian troops fighting in the city are now under unprecedented pressure. In recent days, the Vostok Group begin dropping more leaflets over the city, using both drones and artillery, to encourage these soldiers and officers to surrender.

Surrender could soon become the only way out of Huliaipole for Ukrainian troops. A recent deadly “friendly fire” artillery attack on the 102nd Territorial Defense Brigade near the city, turned out to be the work of blocking detachments belonging to the 225th Separate Assault Battalion, at least according to some Russian and Ukrainian sources.

It is still unclear if Kiev forces are deploying any meaningful reinforcements in the city, or even if they have the resources to do so.

In any case, Ukraine appears to be heading towards a defeat in Huliaipole. The battle there could go on for weeks, or even months, but the end result will likely be in favor of the side with better planning and better resources and that is without a doubt the Russian military.
