The Russian Ministry of Defense announced on August 31 that a missile strike had destroyed a large missile and artillery warehouse of Kiev Forces in the Sumy region.

“During reconnaissance activities in the area of the village of Nizhnyaya Syrovatka, five kilometers south of the city of Sumy, the Russian Armed Forces discovered a large warehouse of rocket and artillery weapons [ammunition] and military property of the Ukrainian Armed Forces,” the ministry said in a statement.

“After a thorough analysis of the received intelligence data and confirmation of the activity of Ukrainian nationalist formations in this area, it was decided to carry out a pinpoint strike on the military facility,” it added.

According to the ministry, “as a result of the missile strike carried out by the crew of the Iskander-M of the Russian Armed Forces, the warehouse was destroyed.” Video footage showing the successful strike was released.

Separately, Russian media reported another strike on a facility producing drones for Kiev forces in an unspecified part of Sumy.

Video footage suggests that the strike was also carried out using an Iskander-M tactical ballistic missile. However, this is yet to be confirmed.

The Iskander-M has a range of nearly 500 kilometers. It can be armed with different conventional warheads, including a cluster munitions warhead, a fuel–air explosive enhanced-blast warhead, a high-explosive fragmentation warhead, an earth penetrator for bunker busting and an electromagnetic pulse device for anti-radar missions.

The highly-maneuverable missile is guided by a GLONASS-aided inertial navigation system. It can be also equipped with an optical seeker with a digitized scene-mapping area correlator system for terminal guidance.

Since the start of the Ukrainian attack on the Russian region of Kursk earlier this month, the Russian military has mainly used the Iskander-M to hit high-value targets of Kiev forces in neighboring Sumy.
