The Russian military has began to use Molniya-2 fixed-wing drones to deliver smaller FPV suicide quadcopters, a photo released by Ukrainian media on June 4 revealed.

The photo shows a Molniya-2 flying at a low altitude somewhere over the special military operation zone with an FPV quadcopter strapped over it. The photo was likely taken from the video feed of a Ukrainian FPV interceptor drone that was chasing the Molniya-2.

The Molniya-2 has earned a reputation as the AK-47 Kalashnikov of drones due to its basic design and effectiveness. The twin-engine electric drone is made out of cheap materials like plywood, aluminum tubing and plastic. It is said to have a range of 40 kilometers and can carry a payload weighing ten kilograms.

The drone can be used for reconnaissance. However, it is often used in suicide attacks. For such missions, it typically carries a TM-62 blast mine, a KZ-6 shaped charge or dual RPO-A thermobaric warheads.

The control system of the drone is very similar to the basic ones used in FPV quadcopter. It includes a camera and a two-way radio data-link.

The Russian military has been experimenting with FPV drone carriers for a while now. The main aim of such carriers is to deliver the quadcopters to targets located far behind the line of sight, all while providing target accusation and data-link relay.

The use of the Molniya-2 in such a role shows the flexibility of the drone, which has demonstrated its effectiveness across the special operation zone.
