Russian ballistic missiles hit a warehouse near the city of Boryspil located some 35 kilometers to the east of the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, on August 22, destroying trucks used to launch one-way attack drones.
At least six missiles, including two allegedly armed with cluster munitions, were reportedly used in the attack. Ukrainian media reported that in addition to the warehouse, a parking lot, vehicles, and a gas station were hit. Several fires broke out. Two people were killed and eight others were wounded.
Images that surfaced online later revealed that several trucks used by Kyiv forces to launch FP-2 one-way attack drones were destroyed.
Kyiv forces revealed earlier this year that they have been using modified civilian trucks to launch one-way attack drones against Russia. The trucks, which have no visible military markings, are equipped to covertly move drones, or even to directly launch them from a side ramp.
The FP-2 typically launched from these trucks is a mid-range version of the FP-1 fixed-wing suicide drone, with the range reduced from 1,400 kilometers to just 200 kilometers, and the weight of the warhead increased from around 50 kg up to 105 kg.
The drone is guided via a GPS-aided inertial navigation system and can be equipped with an optical targeting system with a Starlink satellite terminal to provide man-in-the-loop guidance in the terminal phase.
Ukraine was hit by a large-scale missile and drone attack overnight, with the Russian Defense Ministry later announcing that the strike hit the Darnitsa locomotive depot in Kyiv, which served as a key rail repair hub for military transport, as well as the Brovary sorting and logistics complex in the same region used for storing drone components.
Additionally, the ministry reported that separate strikes successfully hit fuel tanks and military equipment warehouses located within the ports of Chernomorsk and Yuzhny in the Odessa region.
More strikes targeted Odessa later in the day, with reports indicating that around a hundred cruise missiles, one-way attack drones, and glide bombs were launched at targets along the coast of the region. Ukrainian media provided no details on these strikes.
The latest strikes, in particular the ones that hit Kyiv, show that Russian strikes are not just increasing but also becoming more effective and accurate.
