Russia is testing redesigned external weapon mounts on its Mi-8AMTSh-VN military helicopters, potentially expanding their ability to carry cruise missiles and jet-powered drones.

The modifications have been observed on helicopters associated with Russian special operations forces. The new mounting structures replace Soviet-era BD3-57KrV weapon racks with a more aerodynamic design. The modifications reduce the number of external attachment points from six to four, while each retains a reported maximum payload capacity of 500 kilograms.

The redesigned mounts could also address limitations in the older system, which made it difficult to fully equip B8V20 unguided rocket pods positioned close to the helicopter’s fuselage.

The changes appear intended to improve weapons integration and allow greater flexibility in configuring the aircraft’s external armament. However, the intended weapons fit has not been officially confirmed.

The weapons options likely include compact cruise missiles like the Dan-T as well as jet-powered drones. The Dan-T has a launch weight of 268 kilograms, carries a warhead weighing up to 130 kilograms, reaches a maximum speed of 500 kilometers per hour and has a stated range of 450 kilometers. Its listed guidance system combines satellite navigation with inertial navigation. The cruise missile is designed for launch from helicopters.

The Mi-8AMTSh-VN, also known as the Sapsan, is a specialized armed variant of the Mi-8 transport helicopter developed for military operations, including missions involving the deployment of troops in difficult environments.

The new mounts could expand its role by allowing it to carry a broader range of guided weapons alongside its existing rocket armament.
