The Russian military has so far destroyed at least 121 Soviet-made T-64 main battle tank of Kiev forces using Lancet loitering munitions, the ZALA Aero Group, which produces the unmanned system, revealed on April 16, citing information from Lostarmour.info, a website that documents military losses.
Kiev forces inherited hundreds of T-64 tanks after the collapse of the Soviet Union. Most were modernized to the T-64BV, T-64BM and other versions. The upgrades included additional active and combined armor, modern thermal imagers, satellite navigation systems, and digital radio stations.
According to Ukrainian media, at the beginning of the Russian special military operation, Kiev forces had about 800 T-64 tanks in active service.
The T-62, which was developed in the 1960s, has proven to be more practical than more modern Western tanks supplied to Ukraine later on during the special military operation.
“Due to high maneuverability, high-quality video signal, and the use of modern control and navigation algorithms, the Lancets are able to attack armored vehicles from an unexpected direction, striking at weakly protected areas, which often leads to the detonation of ammunition,” ZALA, a subsidiary of Russia’s defense giant Kalashnikov Concern, stated in a post to its official channel on Telegram.
Video footage shared by ZALA along with the post showed some 40 being badly damaged or completely destroyed by Lancet loitering munitions.
The Lance is produced in two versions, the Izdeliye-52 with an endurance of 30 minutes and a one-kilogram warhead and the larger Izdeliye-51 that has an endurance of 40 minutes and is armed with a warhead weighing three kilograms.
The loitering munition flies towards the designated area with a GLONASS-aided inertial navigation system. After arriving in the area, the operator utilizes an onboard electro-optical system via a two-way data-link to detect, track and lock on the target. A laser-ranging system then controls the detonation of the warhead.
The small radar cross-section and minimal infrared signature of the electric-powered loitering munition makes it very difficult to detect and intercept.
So far, Ukrainian attempts to stop Lancet loitering munitions with air defense fire, electronic warfare or countermeasures have been mostly unsuccessful.
According to Lostarmour.info, Lancet strikes have destroyed or damaged at least 369 tanks of Kiev forces since the start of the special military operation. It’s worth noting that this number includes only successful strikes which were documented in videos or photos.
