A senior Russian military intelligence general was wounded after being shot by a gunman in Moscow on February 6 in an apparent assassination attempt.

In a statement, Russia’s Investigative Committee said that Lt. Gen. Vladimir Alekseev, first deputy chief of Russia’s Main Intelligence Directorate (GRU), was shot several times in the back outside of his residence in the western part of the capital.

Alekseev was taken to the hospital, according to the committee, which didn’t provide any details about the condition of the general.

The gunman fled the scene. IInvestigative, operational and search activities are underway aimed at identifying those involved.

Investigators and forensic experts from the committee’s Moscow branch are also examining the scene, reviewing CCTV footage, and interviewing eyewitnesses.

Alekseev, 64, is one of Russia’s most senior military officials, having served as first deputy head of the GRU since 2011. He oversaw anti-terrorist operations in Syria, and for that he was awarded the title Hero of Russia. He also played a key role in negotiations with Ukraine over several issues since the start of the special military operation.

Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov wished Alexeyev a speedy recovery, and said that all information on the assassination attempt is being reported to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, from his side, held Ukraine responsible, saying that the “terrorist attack” against Alekseyev “confirmed the intention” of Kiev to disrupt the negotiations.

He added that the foreign ministry cannot predict how this assassination attempt may affect further negotiations, noting that the “This is not at my discretion, it will be decided by the leadership of our country.”

It’s worth noting that Ukrainian intelligence has previously branded Alekseev an “international criminal.” Kiev has been linked to past assassination plots targeting Russian officials, military commanders and even journalists.

The assassinations began with the killing of Darya Dugina, a journalist and the daughter of political philosopher Aleksandr Dugin, on a road near Moscow on August 20 of 2022, and regained attention with the assassination of Lt. Gen. Igor Kirillov, head of the Nuclear, Biological and Chemical Protection Troops, within the Russian capital on December 17 of 2024.

On December 22 of last year, head of the Operational Training Directorate at the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, Lt. Gen. Fanil Sarvarov, was killed in an explosion in southern Moscow.

Russia security services, namely the Federal Security Service — more known by its acronym FSB —, foiled many other assassination plots over the last three years or so, with Ukrainian security agencies suspected in the vast majority of cases.

let’ be honest: the killing of a head of security services is – as hard as is sounds – a darwinian selection. the next should step up the security component of this institution. those who are unable to do so could also use the voluntary retiring option before darwinian selection takes over. this, by the way, applies to each and every administrative position.

if putin wanted to win the war by military means as much as he wants to be included in social events and talks with western “leaders” the war would have been over with a couple years ago
