Russian drone operators are inflicting heavy material losses on Kiev forces in the Sumy direction, mostly using first-person view (FPV) suicide quadcopters guided jamming-proof fiber-optic cables.
A video showing a drone strike against what appears to be a Soviet-made T-72 main battle tank of Kiev forces somewhere in Sumy, close to the border with the Russian region of Kursk, surfaced online on September 18.
The operator skillfully flew the drone through the camouflaged cage protecting the tank, then hit it right between the turret and chassis. The drone was apparently armed with a shaped charge that immediately set the tank’s ammunition and fuel on fire causing a large blast that sent the turrets meters into the sky.
On September 19, another video showing an attack with multiple drones on a similar tank in Sumy was posted to social networks.
The tank burst into flames after the operator of one of the drones flew it right into the driver’s hatch. It was also completely destroyed.
Other videos from the past two days show several other weapons of Kiev forces, including even drones, getting knocked out by Russian FPV drones.
Also earlier this week, Russian drone operators destroyed an American-made Abrams tank in Sumy, with some suggesting that it was one of several dozen M1A1 AIM v.1 supplied recently to Ukraine by Australia. There was also evidence of a Stridsvagn 103, a Swedish Cold War-era main battle tank with no turret, being destroyed in the same direction by a drone. The supply of this type of tanks to Ukraine was not reported before.
The recent losses indicate that Kiev forces are attempting to amass a fairly large armored force in Sumy, possibly in preparation to launch a major counterattack against the Russian military there. The strong presence of drone units there will make any such suicidal, to say the least.
