Russian forces and Turkish-backed militants exchanged artillery fire in the northern Raqqa countryside on November 28, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR).
The monitoring group reported that Russian forces fired at least five shells from their coordination and operations center in the key town of Ain Issa at nearby militants’ positions. The militants responded with five rounds, which landed in the outskirt of the Russian base.
Kurdish sources reported an exchange of fire around Ain Issa. However, the SOHR’s claims have not been verified, yet.

The Russian Military Police and the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) established Ain Issa coordination and operations center earlier this month. Loads of ammunition were stored in the center. However, it is still unclear if any Russian artillery unit was deployed there.
Last week, Turkish-backed militants launched a large-scale attack on Ain Issa, violating Ankara’s recent agreement with Moscow. The SDF managed to repel the attack with support from the Syrian Arab Army (SAA), which deployed several units near the town last month.
