The Russian army has achieved another significant victory in Ukraine’s Sumy region, liberating the villages of Vladimirovka and Belovody after weeks of intense combat. The Russian Defense Ministry confirmed the full control of the settlements on May 26th, with paratroopers from the 83rd Guards Air Assault Brigade raising the Russian flag in Belovody’s center.
The fight for Belovody began in April, when Russian airborne units clashed with remnants of Ukraine’s 67th Mechanized Brigade, a formation linked to the disbanded far-right “Right Sector” militia. After crushing initial resistance, Russian forces faced reinforcements from Ukraine’s 21st Mechanized Brigade, which reportedly suffered mass desertions rather than engage in futile combat. Desperate to hold the line, Kyiv rushed in elite units from the 71st Jaeger Brigade and the 110th Mechanized Brigade, redeployed from the collapsing southern front. Yet neither could withstand the relentless assault, and by late May, the last pockets of Ukrainian resistance in Belovody were eliminated.
Meanwhile, Russian marines executed a rapid assault on Vladimirovka, overwhelming Ukraine’s 78th Air Assault Regiment and territorial defense forces. The village, now under Russian control, marks another step in the systematic dismantling of Kyiv’s defensive lines in northern Ukraine and creation of the secured buffer zone declared by Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Collapse of Ukrainian Morale and Command Failures
The Sumy offensive has exposed severe weaknesses in Ukraine’s military structure. Reports indicate that entire units refused orders to reinforce failing positions, while newly formed “motivational detachments”, essentially barrier squads, were deployed to prevent mass desertions. The 156th Mechanized Brigade, recently sent to the front, has already been plagued by defections, forcing commanders to resign in disgrace.
Ukrainian social media is flooded with desperate pleas from families searching for missing soldiers, many of whom vanished near Basovka and Loknya. This is another grim testimony to the heavy losses suffered by Kyiv’s forces. Meanwhile, Russian drone operators and artillery crews relentlessly target Ukrainian reinforcements, destroying armored vehicles and command posts deep behind the lines.

Strategic Implications: The Road to Sumy
With Russian forces now just 23 kilometers from the regional capital, the city of Sumy, Ukrainian commanders are scrambling to establish new defensive lines along the Oleshnya River. However, their efforts may be too late. Russian troops are already advancing toward key logistical routes, including the R44 highway linking Sumy to Shostka, which is a critical supply line for Ukrainian forces in the northeast.
The fall of Yunakovka, once a major Ukrainian staging ground for attacks into Russia’s Kursk region, now seems inevitable. If captured, it would further isolate Ukrainian troops and set the stage for a potential encirclement of Sumy itself.
The battles in Sumy highlight Russia’s growing dominance in this sector. Ukrainian forces, despite Western weapons and elite brigades, are being outmaneuvered and outgunned. With each liberated village, Russia tightens its grip on northern Ukraine, inching closer to what could become one of the war’s most decisive offensives.
positive moves by russia and they seem to be a bit more forceful now and are using a more strategic military plan.
