Forces from the Russian military group in Syria are still operating at Qamishli International Airport in the northeast of the country, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported on April 12.
The London-based monitoring group released video footage showing Russian transport and attack helicopters as well as radars at the airport which is located in the northern countryside of al-Hasakha, right on the border with Turkey.
Amid the collapse of the Assad regime last December, the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), which is backed by the United States, took over the airport. However, Russian forces stayed there. Later, reports emerged that Israeli strikes targeted weapons left by the former Syrian Arab Army at the airport.
In a report released last February, the SOHR described the Russian military deployed at Qamishli as “massive” and said that Russian forces were also present at two posts out the airport.
The monitoring group even revealed in the report that the Russian Aerospace Forces were still operating fighter jets out of the airport.
Qamishli is the third known deployment point of the Russian military group in Syria besides the port of Tartus and Khmeimim Air Base on the coast. While the airport is less known, it plays a key role in maintaining Russian operations in the country as it helps secure incoming flights from the eastern direction.
Russia is yet to reach an agreement with the Syrian interim government on its bases in the country. Such an agreement would be important to keep operations at Tartus and Khmeimim.
Nevertheless, the situation is different for Qamishli as the SDF is in control of al-Haskah and most of northeastern Syria. Russia enjoys good relations with the Kurdish-led group, despite its links to the U.S.
In fact, the relationship between Russia and the SDF may grow into something more serious in the coming months. The administration of the U.S. President Donald Trump could pull out its forces from Syria, which would open the door for a Russian-Kurdish alliance. In this case, Russian military presence in the northeast of the country could expand beyond Qamishli.
