The Russian military’s Vostok [East] Group of Forces repelled six more counterattacks near the Haichur River line in Zaporizhzhia on February 17, inflicting heavy losses on Kiev forces.
One counterattack saw the 1st Separate Assault Regiment, more known as “Da Vinci Wolves,” attempting to advance near Ternovatoe in armored formation. In a second, the 5th Separate Guards Motor Rifle Brigade attacked near Rizdvyanka. The third counterattack was carried out by the 210th Assault Regiment, which attempted to advance to the southeast of Vozdvizhevka.
Two additional counterattacks were carried out by the 95th Rifle Division, one near Alexandrovka, and another close to Hai.
The last counterattack took place in the direction of Staroukrainka. It was carried out by the 225th Separate Assault Regiment.
The drone units of the Vostok Group of Forces played a key role in repelling all six Ukrainian counterattacks. Kiev forces lost four armored vehicles, including two BMP-type infantry fighting vehicles, along with more than 2 platoons of troops while attempting to advance.
Kiev forces began launching coordinated counterattacks close to the Hacihur River line last week after bringing large reinforcements, including several assault formations and foreign mercenary groups, into Zaporizhzhia.
The Vostok Group of Forces has so far held up its positions with great success. However, Ukraine will likely continue to launch counterattacks for the next few days, or even weeks.
Kiev forces are taking heavy losses, but the main object of these counterattacks is not necessary to regain, but rather to slow down the advance of the Russian side. In recent months, the Vostok Group made significant gains in Zaporizhzhia, breaking through one Ukrainian defense line after another, from the Yanchur River to the Haichur River.
These losses will eventually catch up with Kiev forces, and once they can no longer launch counterattacks, the Vostok Group of Forces will likely resume advance faster than before.
