Russian combat drones are actively hunting down the equipment of Kiev forces in the Ukrainian region of Sumy, which borders the Kursk region in Russia.

Between May 1 and 31, nine videos showing strikes by Orion and Forpost-R combat drones in Sumy were posted to social networks. The strikes destroyed or damaged at least one main battle tank, six armored vehicles and two howitzers of Kiev forces.

The Orion, which was developed by Russia’s Kronstadt Group, has an endurance of 24 hours and a combat radius of 250 kilometers. Meanwhile, the Forpost-R is a modernized variant of the original Forpost drone, which is a licensed copy of the Israeli IAI Searcher. The drone has a range of 400 kilometers and an endurance of 18 hours.

The X-BPLA missile is the main armament of both drones. It is the air-launched version of the Kornet-D anti-tank missile, with semi-active laser guidance instead of the laser beam-riding used in the ground version.

The missile has a maximum range of eight kilometers and is armed with a six-kilogram high-explosive fragmentation warhead.

Both the Orion and the Forpost-R can be also armed with the KAB-20 light glide bomb, which is available in two versions, the Kab-20L that is guided by a GLONASS-aided inertial navigation system, and the Kab-20S, which is also equipped with a semi-active laser seeker. The bomb carries a seven-kilogram high-explosive fragmentation warhead and has a range of eight kilometers.

Russian combat drones played a key role in foiling the Ukrainian infiltration into Kursk, and are now actively facilitating the advance of the Russian military Sumy.

While the videos from May showed only nine strikes, the real number is likely much higher. The Russian military keeps much of its drone operations under tight wraps.
