A Russian Forpost-R combat drone destroyed a group of Syrian militants who planned a terror attack on an oil refinery in the country, the deputy chief of the Russian Center for Reconciliation in Syria announced on June 20.

“In the past day, a Russian-made Forpost-R reconnaissance and attack drone destroyed a group of militants near the Faghdad oil refinery in the Syrian desert [Badiya],” Major General Yury Popov said. “They were plotting a terror attack on the Syrian oil infrastructure facility.”

Videos showing the drone strikes reported by the Russian Center for Reconciliation in Syria and other recent airstrikes on militants in the Badiya surfaced online on the same day.

The Forpost-R is a modernized variant of the original Forpost drone, which is a licensed copy of the Israeli IAI Searcher. This version is made from Russian components and has a domestic software. The drone has a takeoff weight of 500 kg, a range of 400 kilometers and an endurance of 18 hours at an altitude of up to 6,000 meters.

The combat drone is typically armed with KAB-20 light glide bombs or X-BPLA missiles, an air-launched version of the Kornet-D.

Attacks on government forces and civilian infrastructure in the Badiya and other parts of central Syria have increased in recent months. Most of the attacks were blamed on ISIS, which rarely claims responsibility.

In recent months, the Syrian Arab Army intensified operations in the central region in cooperation with the Russian Aerospace Forces.

There were also reports of the Russia military supplying Forpost-R combat drones to Syria to boost operations in the Badiya. However, these reports are yet to be confirmed.
