Russian, Iranian, and Chinese warships trained to inspect and liberate vessels from mock terrorists in the course of the joint naval exercise Security Belt 2025, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced on March 12.
The naval exercise, which kicked off just a day earlier, is taking place off Iran’s shores, in the northern Indian Ocean. Azerbaijan, South Africa, Oman, Kazakhstan, Pakistan, Qatar, Iraq, the United Arab Emirates and Sri Lanka are attending the Iranian-Russian-Chinese exercise as observers.
According to the Russian MoD, the corvettes Rezky, Aldar Tsydenzhapov, and the medium-sized sea tanker Pechenga of the Pacific Fleet are taking part in the exercise.
Over the past two days, crews of combat ships conducted day- and night-time firing of large-calibre machine-guns and small-arms at targets simulating uncrewed surface vehicles and unmanned aerial vehicles of a mock enemy, the ministry said in a statement.
“During the key episodes of the exercise, the crews searched a ship captured by mock terrorists as well as trained joint operations of special operations units to liberate the ship,” it added.
Naval helicopters were also engaged in reconnaissance and delivery of commandos to the seized vessel, according to the ministry, which said that the warships completed the exercise and returned to the Iranian port of Chabakar.
The Security Belt exercise was held for the eighth time since 2018. This year, 15 warships, supply ships, boats and combat helicopters are taking part.
Iranian state media said that the joint exercise aims to “strengthen security in the region, and expand multilateral cooperation between participating countries”,
Meanwhile, the Chinese Ministry of Defense stated that the exercise is meant to deepen military mutual trust and pragmatic cooperation among the participating countries’ troops.
With President Donlad Trump assuming office earlier this year, the United States increased pressure on Iran. The country shares a common desire with Russia and China to counter what they characterize as American hegemony in the Middle East.
