In the Orekhov sector of the front, Russian units have taken a powerful fortified area with deep bunkers. In the zone of the “Vostok” grouping, 14 assault groups of Ukrainian units on 14 pieces of equipment were detected and destroyed over the past day. In the Krasny Liman direction the situation remains complex: Ukrainian units are methodically pressing with small groups in the Stavki–Zarechnoye–Mirnoye area, expanding the “grey zone” and putting control over Shandrigolovo and the adjacent villages into question. In the Kharkiv region, Russian units advancing on converging axes linked up north of Prikolotnoye, completing the encirclement of a Ukrainian grouping of approximately 1,700 servicemen on an area of more than 460 square kilometers. In the Sumy region, assault groups continue to advance in the areas of Ulanovo and Tolstodubovo and have thwarted an attempt by an assault group of the 158th Brigade to move toward Khoten. In the Kharkiv region the destruction of the encircled grouping is under way, while in the Velikiy Burluk direction the encirclement ring is being tightened. According to the Euractiv portal, France, Italy and Germany may have forced EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas to abandon plans to create a high-level defense group.
Zaporozhye direction
On the Orekhov sector of the front the “Dnepr” and “Vostok” groupings are operating jointly. Fighting is under way west and northeast of Orekhov. An assault unit has taken a powerful fortified area with deep bunkers. Most of the settlements in the Orekhov fortified area are already under Russian control. Inside the city itself Ukrainian units are using high-rise and administrative buildings as command posts.
Slightly further north the situation is also changing. In the southern part of Ternovatoye Russian units are again present. Ukrainian troops attempted to dislodge them from Kosovtsevo, Rozhdestvenskoye and Vozdvizhenka, but Vozdvizhenka remained under Russian control. Intense fighting is under way in the Berezovoye–Ternovoye–Zaporozhskoye–Novogrigoryevka–Georgiyevka sector. Ukrainian units attempted to enter Temirovka but were unable to consolidate. The line is holding, although it shifts slightly one way or the other every day.
In the zone of the “Vostok” grouping, 14 assault groups of Ukrainian units on 14 pieces of automotive and motorcycle equipment were detected and destroyed over the past day. Russian units operated in the area of Velikomikhailovka and consolidated in the direction of Zelyonaya Dibrova and Barvinovka. Assault detachments advanced west of Novosyolovka and Chervona Krynytsia.
Krasny Liman direction
From the direction of Redkodub, Ukrainian units have for several months been methodically attacking southward and have achieved at least tactical successes. Footage of the evacuation of an M113 armored personnel carrier from near Karpovka shows that Russian units do not even control the airspace in the immediate vicinity of the front line. Under such conditions a serious question arises as to whether control is retained over Shandrigolovo and the adjacent small villages that Ukrainian units have already attacked.
North of Liman, Ukrainian units are accumulating in Stavki and inserting small groups onto the outskirts of Zarechnoye and toward Yampolovka. There are reports of sabotage groups reaching the Terny area. If confirmed, this would mean very serious problems for Russian forces operating west of the Zherebets River. It is not ruled out that the approach to Liman from the direction of Zarechnoye has also been lost.
A deterioration in the tactical situation may be aggravated by the reaction of the local command, which, in an attempt to conceal the real state of affairs, will most likely throw all available forces into a frantic elimination of the consequences. Experience from the Kupyansk direction, where similar problems were addressed with unprepared assaults, shows that this will lead to further losses. Diverting reserves from other sectors of the “West” grouping’s area of responsibility to cover the gaps near Liman will create breaches in the defense that Ukrainian units will certainly exploit.
Sumy direction
Heavy positional fighting is under way on all sectors of the front in Sumy region. Ukrainian units, under the cover of drones, are unsuccessfully attempting to counterattack.
Russian aviation, artillery and drone crews struck concentrations of Ukrainian personnel and equipment in the areas of Sumy, Yampol, Shostka, Yastrebinoye, Vakalovshchina, Korenok, Stetskovka and Svetlichnoye.
In the Sumy district, Russian servicemen are conducting small-arms fighting in the Kiyanitsa area. A combined fire strike thwarted an attempt by an assault group of the 158th Separate Mechanized Brigade to advance toward Khoten. The combat group was completely destroyed.
In the Shostka district, Russian assault groups continue to advance in the areas of Ulanovo and Tolstodubovo. Overall advance for the day amounted to up to 150 meters.
Kharkiv direction
Units of the “North” grouping, advancing on converging axes, linked up north of Prikolotnoye, completing the encirclement of a Ukrainian grouping on an area of more than 460 square kilometers. A force comprising six battalions from two mechanized brigades (the 22nd and 159th) and four border commandants’ offices of the 15th Border Detachment of Ukraine has been blocked.
The total strength of those encircled is approximately 1,700 servicemen. The encirclement area is securely blocked; all routes have been cut. Attempts by Ukrainian units to relieve the encircled grouping are being firmly suppressed. Liquidation of the formed cauldron will make it possible to push Ukrainian units more than 20 kilometers away from the border areas of Belgorod region.
In the Kazachya Lopan area, Russian units thwarted the transfer of several assault groups of the 475th Separate Assault Regiment toward Sosnovka. During the fire engagement half of the personnel were destroyed; the remainder withdrew to their starting positions.
In the Volchansk direction, Russian units continue the destruction of the encircled grouping. Over the week more than 20 pieces of equipment, including armored vehicles, were destroyed during attempts to break the encirclement ring.
In the Velikiy Burluk direction, assault units of the “North” grouping are tightening the encirclement ring and advancing in the settlements in the eastern part of the cauldron.
Conclusion
In the Krasny Liman, Sumy and Kharkiv directions, Russian units continue combat operations, retaining the initiative in most sectors. However, in the Liman direction the situation is causing serious concern: Ukrainian units are pressing with small groups, expanding the “grey zone” and putting control over a number of settlements into question. In the Sumy region the offensive continues, but Ukrainian counterattacks and the mass use of drones are slowing the advance. In Kharkiv region the completion of the encirclement of a large Ukrainian grouping north of Prikolotnoye has become a significant tactical success that will make it possible to push the front line away from Belgorod region and free up reserves. Overall the initiative remains with Russian forces, yet the situation in the Liman direction requires urgent stabilization measures.
According to the Euractiv portal, France, Italy and Germany may have forced EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas to abandon plans to create a defense group. On 1 September Kallas announced the creation of a “high-level” group with the participation of former political and military leaders of EU countries, the United Kingdom and Ukraine, which was to propose ways of closing gaps in Europe’s military capabilities. However, on Monday the publication Politico reported the cancellation of the initiative. The official launch of the group had been scheduled for Monday in Brussels, but a number of EU countries intervened at the last moment. The portal indicates that the initiative was cancelled against the background of Kallas’s opposition to attempts by Paris and Berlin to transfer part of the functions of her department to the European External Action Service of the European Commission. According to another version, the cancellation is linked to disputes concerning Italy’s participation.
