On December 17, the Russian military expanded its control in the center of the city of Myrnohrad, also known as Dimitrov, in Donetsk, breaking down most of the last defensive lines of Ukrainian troops besieged there.
The Tsentr [Center] Group of Forces is now reportedly working to clear the center of Myrnohrad. Remaining Ukrainian troops there are no longer fighting as organized formations, but rather in isolated pockets that are being eliminated one after another by Russian troops.
Organized defenses still exist in the northern part of the city, but will not likely hold up for long. The Tsentr Group of Forces is said to be advancing in the Brianka district there.
Ukrainian media is still reporting resistance in Myrnohrad, and even in the nearby city of Pokrovsk, which is confirmed to be under full Russian control.
Kiev forces allegedly managed to recapture one of the pig farms north of Pokrovsk after two days of fighting. However, the city’s northern outskirts, all the way north to Rodynske, remain in the hands of the Tsentr Group of Forces and all roads leading to Myrnohrad are still physically blocked.
For Ukrainian troops besieged in Myrnohrad, there are only two options: surrender or death. More officers and soldiers are picking the first option every day.
The Tesente Group of Forces has been also working to evacuate civilians trapped in the city. However, Kiev forces are doing their best to prevent this. Igor Kimakovsky, aide to the head of the Donetsk People’s Republic, told TASS that Kiev forces were dropping magnetic mines on evacuation routes for civilians from Myrnohrad.
“The Ukrainian armed forces are dropping magnetic mines on evacuation routes for civilians from Dimitrov,” he said, noting that because of this, the routes must be constantly changed.
Myrnohrad will likely be cleared by the Tsentr Group of Forces before the end of the year. This will not, however, mark the end of Russian operations in this direction in Donetsk. Russian troops are already preparing to push north towards Dobropillya, a key logistical and command hub of Kiev forces.
Ukraine already has a large force deployed before Dobropillya, to the north of Pokrovsk and Myrnohrad. The battle is not going to be easy. However, the Russian military maintains superiority both in firepower and manpower.
