On January 3, Russian military operations to the east of the city of Kostiantynivka in Donetsk began to gain momentum with the capture of a settlement.
Bondarnoye, located 28 kilometers away from Kostiantynivka, was captured by the Yug [South] Group of Forces, according to the Russian Ministry of Defense. The capture of the settlement enhanced fire control over the E40 highway, located to the west, which leads north to the city of Slovyansk.
The Yug Group of Forces also made gains to the west of the E40 in recent days, mainly in and around Markove, some six square kilometers were secured there.
The advance to the east and west of the highway may be a part of ongoing preparation for an offensive towards Slovyansk. However, it is even more likely that the Yug Group of Forces is preparing to advance north, then west to besiege Kiev forces in Kostiantynivka.
Russian troops are already fighting inside the city, specifically in its southern and southeastern parts. Advance in the city’s southern outskirts also accelerated recently.
The Yug Group of Forces secured a large area to the south of Kostiantynivka in the last few days, close to the railway station and west of Ivanopol.
The latest gains came across a wide front, from the east of the E40 to the south of Kostiantynivka, which indicate that Kiev forces are struggling to hold up onto the current front line. Soon, Russian troops could break through, most likely somewhere between the highway and the city.
Kostiantynivka is a large industrial city with many high-rise buildings, factories and other structures that favors the defenders. Thus, the battle there is expected to go on for months. The situation is not that different with Slovyansk. The Yug Group of Forces could take months to reach the city.
With a clear superiority in firepower and manpower, the Russian military posed to win both cities, eventually. Kiev will have to make some difficult decisions later this year.
