The Russian military is about to make a serious breakthrough between Seversk and Liman in Donetsk, according to reports from October 10, which also revealed a desperate Ukrainian attempt to slow down the attack on Kostiantynivka nearby.
The Yug [South] Group of Forces made serious gains in Yampil, imposing control over a large part of the settlement’s north part after securing most of the eastern part.
Yampil is a critical point for the Ukrainian defense line between Seversk and Liman. The settlement oversees the main route linking the two key cities. Kiev forces use this route to rotate troops, as well as to bring in supplies.
If Russian troops block the route, they would be able to pressure Liman from the south for the first time. As for Seversk, the situation will be far more worse for Ukrainian troops there, who are already facing pressure from the northern, eastern and southern directions.
The Yug Group of Forces has already reached Seversk from the north, but the situation from the south is getting very bad for Kiev forces.
Ukrainian media recently acknowledged that Russian troops took over 11 square kilometers of territory around Vyimka right to the southeast of Seversk.
Moving to the west in Donetsk, the Yug Group of Forces attack on Kostiantynivka appears to be gaining momentum once again.
Russian troops expanded their control to the east of Ivanopillya, located to the south of Kostiantynivka. Another push was reported from Oleksandro-Shul’tyne nearby towards the southern outskirts of the key city. Heavy fighting is said to be taking place there.
In a desperate attempt to slow down the advance of Russian troops, Kiev forces recently blew up a branch of the Tolyatti-Odessa ammonia pipeline which is situated in 2.5 kilometers east of Rusin Yar, to the west of Kostiantynivka, according to the Russian Ministry of Defense.
“The Ukrainian Armed Forces while retreating from this area at around 13.05 on 9 October 2025 blew up the pipeline resulting in the release of residual ammonia through its damaged section,” the ministry said, noting that no Russian troops were harmed.
Kostiantynivka is a very dense industrial city. Kiev forces could set up effective defenses there. However, this will not be possible if Ukraine decided to keep wasting its resources on other fronts, which are borderline indefensible anymore, like Seversk.
The Russian military has been benefiting from Ukraine’s maximalist defense strategy, and will likely continue to do so by shifting focus from one direction to another to distract Kiev forces and force them to stretch their defenses and exhaust their limited resource
