Ukrainian defenses in the direction of Zaporozhye appear to be experiencing a limited collapse, with reports from October 8 faster advance by the Russian military there.
The Russian Ministry of Defense announced that the Vostok [East] Group of Forces had “liberated” Novogrigorovka. The settlement is located right to the north of Novovasylivske, which was captured by Russian troops just a day earlier, according to the ministry.
“As a result of the resolute and cohesive actions of the servicemen of the 394th Guards Motorised Rifle Regiment and the 60th Separate Motorised Rifle Brigade of the 5th Guards Combined Arms Army of the Vostok Group of Forces, the settlement of Novogrigorovka (Zaporozhye region) has been liberated,” the ministry said in a statement.
“In the course of intensive offensive actions, the servicemen of these units moped up more than 190 buildings from the AFU (Armed Forces of Ukraine). In the territory of the settlement, the servicemen hoisted state flags of the Russian Federation,” it added.
Video footage released by the ministry shows intense air and artillery strikes on Ukrainian positions and fortifications in Novogrigorovka, in addition to a number of drone attacks that targeted vehicles by Kiev forces inside and close to the settlement.
Another video that was shared by Russian sources shows Russian troops clearing houses in Novogrigorovka, and eliminating a group of Ukrainian troops from point blank.
In addition to capturing Novogrigorovka, Russian troops have reportedly entered Okhotnyche. Violent clashes are now taking place there.
The fall of Okhotnyche would very much seal the fate of Novomykolaivka, which is located between the settlement and Novogrigorovka to the north. In fact, Russian troops have already reached the outskirts of Novomykolaivka after crossing the Yanchul River from Novogrigorovka.
More importantly, the capture of Okhotnyche will allow Russian troops to directly attack Poltavka from the northern direction. The key settlement is already under attack from the eastern direction. Kiev forces are showing resistance. However, they seem incapable of conducting a counter attack.
All in all, Ukrainian defenses along the line from Poltavka to Vyshneve to the north in the Dnepropetrovsk direction appear to be experiencing a limited collapse.
With some of Kiev’s best units tied down in the Dobropillia salient and around the city of Pokrovsk to the east in the Donetsk direction, bringing any meaningful reinforcements seems out of the question.
Ukraine will soon have to make a fateful decision, either prioritize defenses between Zaporozhye and Dnepropetrovsk, or risk a complete collapse there in order to keep fighting a lost battle in Pokrovsk. If Kiev’s history of prioritizing politics and media over actually military strategy is anything to go by, it will likely attempt to hold onto the two areas and eventually lose them both.
