The Russian military has destroyed one of the last German-made Leopard 2 main battle tanks in service with Kiev forces with FPV suicide drone.
The tank, a Leopard 2A6 equipped with a cage armor, was struck by two FPV suicide drones guided via fiber-optic cables close to the settlement of Yablunivka in the direction of Sumy. Video footage showing the strikes was posted to social networks on June 28.
Over the last two years, Ukraine received some 60 Leopard 2s of A4, A6 and the Swedish Stridsvagn 122 version, which is similar to the A5, from its backers. More than 50 of these tanks have already been destroyed, damaged or captured by the Russian military.
Kiev forces also received more than a 100 Leopard 1A5s. Around a quarter of these older tanks have been lost already, despite not being used much due to their very bad operational condition.
When it was first supplied, the Leopard 2 was taught by the mainstream media in the West as game changers that would allow Kiev forces to dominate the battlefield.
This image was, however, shattered in the very first day of Ukrainian 2023 spring counteroffensive in the Zaporizhzhia direction, which saw the destruction of multiple Leopard 2A4 and A6s. A year later, many of the remaining tanks were used in the attack on the Russian region of Kursk, which borders Sumy. Only a few survived.
