By the evening of 27 December 2024, Russian army units had cut all paved roads leading to the large settlement of Velyka Novosyolka, which is under the control of the Ukrainian armed forces. This is one of the last large settlements in this part of the Donetsk People’s Republic that remains under the control of the Zelensky regime.
In November and December 2024, the Ukrainian command made every effort to stop the Russian offensive in this direction. The Vremievsky section of the front became notorious for the AFU’s attempts to counterattack Russian units with large masses of poorly trained infantry. In order to intensify its actions in this direction, the AFU command attracted newly formed territorial defence brigades, which immediately rushed into unprepared suicidal attacks against the Russians. As a result, it became common practice in Ukrainian cities for a man who had been kidnapped from the street by Ukrainian military commissars to return two weeks later, but already in the form of a corpse.
The logic behind the actions of the Ukrainian command here is exactly the same as in the Kurakhovo direction. It is an exchange of the lives of thousands of Ukrainians for time and therefore for money.
The Russian units repulsed these attacks without much difficulty or loss of life. And then they continued their advance on the western bank of the Mokrye Yaly River. Russian soldiers managed to occupy several important AFU strongholds behind the road from Gulyaypole to Velyka Novosyolka. In this way, the Russian assault groups physically cut the last road to this settlement.
The Ukrainian forces, for their part, are likely to try to push the Russians back behind the road. However, the success of these actions is highly unlikely given the number of previous unsuccessful attacks and the apparent loss of integrity of the AFU units on this section of the front. The situation can only be improved by the emergence of a strong AFU unit here, capable of carrying out a meaningful attack.
Meanwhile, the occupation of these fortresses by the Russians poses a number of major challenges to the AFU units in Velika Novosyolka. The fact is that the nearest well-equipped Ukrainian defence line is quite far to the north, no longer covering this settlement but the exit to the Dnepropetrovsk region.

In addition, the Russians have about 1 km to go up the hill to gain visual control (from the hill) of the last dirt roads into the settlement. So, they would be able to hit vehicles passing by with even small arms. This means that the time of the Velika Novoselka garrison’s resistance will be counted in a few days. Taking into account the situation of the AFU in the Kursk region, around Kurakhovo, near Pokrovsk, in Toretsk, and Kiev’s preparations for a “new offensive” in the north-east of the country, Kiev simply has no reserves to draw from.
The fate of Velyka Novoselka is sealed. All the Ukrainian sacrifices have proved pointless and useless.
