The Russian military continued its advance in the Donetsk direction on August 16, making additional gains and inflicting some heavy losses on Kiev forces.
In its daily briefing, the Russian Ministry of Defense said that the Zapad [West] Group of Forces had liberated the village of Kolodezi, which is located just under ten kilometers to the northeast of the key city of Lyman.
The group also attacked two mechanized brigades and one motorized infantry brigade of Kiev forces near the villages of Karpovka, Shandrigolovo, and Sredneye in Donetsk, as well as close to the towns of Borovskaya Andreyevka, Kupyansk, Osinovo, Peschanoye, Petropavlovka in the Kharkiv direction, according to the ministry.
Ukrainian losses in these directions amounted to 230 troops, one British-made Mastiff armored vehicle, one Novator armored fighting vehicle, 14 motor vehicles, three artillery guns, four electronic warfare stations, and four ammunition depots.
Later in the day, it was reported that the village of Serebryanka, located just four kilometers to the northeast of the key city of Seversk in Donetsk, was completely secured by the Russian military. Video footage seemed to confirm the capture of the village, although the MoD is yet to make an official announcement.
Over the past week, the Russian military made some serious gains in Donetsk. Kiev forces failed to hold onto their positions in several areas.
The Yug [South] Group of Forces captured the village of Shcherbinovka, while Tsentr [Center] Group of Forces claimed the villages of Yablonovka, Lunacharskoye, Suvorovo, and Nikanorovka. The Vostok [East] Group of Forces was also able to secure the key villages of Iskra and Aleksandrograd.
The recent Russian military advance in Donetsk came under the cover of heavy pinpoint airstrikes and intense drone strikes, mostly carried out by the Rubikon center.
Despite losing all advantage in Donetsk, Kiev forces are still attempting to fight back as a withdrawal could lead to a catastrophic collapse in this direction and beyond.
