On December 16, the Russian military moved closer to Borova by capturing an important settlement nearby, all while expanding its control around Vovchansk to the north in Kharkiv.
The capture of Novoplatonovka, located right to the north of Borova, by the Zapad [West] Group of Forces was announced by the Russian Ministry of Defense.
The loss of the settlement was a blow to Kiev forces, as it allowed Russian troops to reach the Oskil River at a new point and isolate Borova from Bohuslavka to the north. Ukrainian troops in Bohuslavka are now very much trapped and the only way to supply them is via the river which is completely exposed to Russian fire.
Both Bohuslavka and Nova Kruhlyakivka right to the east of it could end up captured by the Zapad Group of Forces within a few days. Russian troops are already fighting in their outskirts.
Once these settlements are secured, the Zapad Group of Forces would be fully set to stage a large attack from Novoplatonovka on the northern part of Borova.
Kiev forces have no real defenses between the two settlements. With sufficient fire support, Russian troops are guaranteed to storm Borova with ease. However, the battle at the large settlement, which serves as a key logistical and transport hub for Kiev forces, will likely go on for a while.
To the north in Kharkiv, the Sever [North] Group of Forces expanded its control around Vovchansk in three different directions.
Russian troops cleared a large area to the west of Liman, which is located to the west of Vovchansk, mounting more pressure on remaining Ukrainian troops in Prylipka, to the north, and approaching Hrafske right along the Siverskyi Donets River.
The troops also expanded their control to the south of Vovchansk by entering the southern part of Vilcha. The settlement will likely be captured soon.
Meanwhile to the east of Vovchansk, the Sever Group of Forces begin advancing towards Vovchanski Khutory. An area located to the northwest of the town along the Vovcha River has been cleared. Russian troops could begin storming the settlement soon.
All in all, the Russian military is accelerating its operations in both Borova and Vovchansk. Kiev forces are clearly lacking the resources to organize successful defenses in both sectors. The counterattack in the city of Kupyansk, which is yet to achieve any of its objectives, is likely the reason.
