On February 18, the Russian military expanded its control near the key city of Huliaipole as it repelled more Ukrainian counterattacks along the Haichur River in Zaporizhzhia.
The Sever [East] Group of Forces captured Krinichnoye, located to the northwest of Huliaipole, according to the Russian Ministry of Defense.
The attack on the Krinichnoye was reportedly led by the 218th Tank Regiment of the 5th Army’s 127th Motor Rifle Division. Russian troops cleared an area of around three square kilometers, including the settlement and all the defense lines in its surroundings.
Ukraine’s 225th Separate Assault Regiment suffered heavy losses while attempting to hold onto the settlement. The unit lost a platoon of troops, along with two armored personnel carriers, two drone control centers, and five “Baba Yaga” attack drones.
Krinichnoye is relatively small, but capturing it will allow the Vostok Group of Forces to expand its control further to the west and northwest of Huliaipole.
In addition to capturing Krinichnoye, the Vostok Group of Forces advanced towards Vozdvizhevka, located further north to the west of Haichur. Russian troops secured 23 kilometers to the south and west of the settlement. Fighting inside the settlement could begin within a few days.
The Vostok Group of Forces was able to advance despite facing another wave of Ukrainian counterattacks near Haichur over the past day.
Russian troops repelled a total of six counterattacks, all carried out by the 95th Rifle Division and the 5th Separate Guards Motor Rifle Brigade of Kiev forces. Fierce fighting took place near Aleksandrovka, Hai, Rizdvyanka, and Kolomiytsy. Ultimately, Ukrainian troops failed to make any meaningful gains.
The counterattacks were not without a cost. Kiev forces lost an armored personnel carrier and two platoons of its elite troops.
Ukraine began launching coordinated counterattacks near the Haichur last week after bringing large reinforcements, including several assault formations and foreign mercenary groups. Kiev forces took heavy losses without restoring much territory. Still, they managed to halt the advance of the Vostok Group of Forces. This is over now, however, as Russian troops are once again expanding their control to the west and northwest of Huliaipole.
