The Russian military had pushed back Kiev forces to their initial positions in the Krasny Liman direction, Acting Head of the Donetsk People’s Republic, Denis Pushilin, announced on September 22.
“In the Krasny Liman area, the enemy carried out a number of actions, conducted reconnaissance by combat in several settlements at the same time: Torskoye, Nevskoye, Ternoye, Novoogorovka. The artillery fire partly suppressed the enemy, partly pushed it back to the initial positions,” he said.
Pushilin also said that the Russian military used aviation to disrupt and hinder the movements of Kiev forces in this direction.
Kiev forces sustained some heavy losses during their recent attacks in the Krasny Liman direction. The Russian military damaged or destroyed two Stridsvagn 122 tanks, the Swedish version of the German Leopard 2, close to Svatovo-Kremennaya. The tanks were reportedly abandoned by their crews after getting stuck in mud. They were both later targeted with Lancet loitering munitions.
The situation of Kiev forces in the South Donetsk direction was not better. The Russian military repelled an attack near Zavetnoye Zhelaniye and took over several Ukrainian strongholds, according to the leader of the movement We Are Together With Russia, Vladimir Rogov.
“We have successes in the Vremevka area. Despite the enemy’s multiple superiority our guys counterattacked and advanced a few hundred meters in the area of Zavetnoye Zhelaniye village. All Ukrainian attacks were repelled. The Ukrainian forces failed to either re-enter the lost positions or get a foothold. Along the valley of the Mokryie Yaly river our forces also advanced and took several enemy strongholds,” he told TASS.
In addition, several airstrikes hit Kiev forces in Donetsk. A Kh-38 air-launched precision-guided missile targeted a Ukrainian position near Ugledar. Two FAB-500 bombs upgraded with gliding and guidance kits also hit a deployment point near Seversk.
In response to its mounting losses, Ukraine is stepping up its attacks on Russian territory. Early on September 22, two drones were shot down off the coast of the Crimean Peninsula and a third was intercepted over the Krasnodar region. Later on in the day, a missile strike targeted the headquarters of the Russian Black Sea Fleet in Crimea.
The Ukrainian counteroffensive, which began more than three months ago, appears to be nearing complete failure. Kiev forces are yet to break through Russian defenses in any directions and worsening weather conditions could force them to halt all operations within a few weeks.
