On March 9, US forces deplyoed in northeastern Syria blocked a Russian military column moving in the direction of the city of Qamishli. Such moves are a common practice for the US military, which seeks to limite the freedom of movement of the Russians in the area as much as possible.

The Syrian Army and Russian forces respond to these US actions symmetrically. For example, on March 8, Syrian troops blocked a U.S. convoy that was attempting to conduct a patrol in the northern al-Hasakah countryside.
