Russian air defense foiled overnight a large-scale Ukrainian attack with ballistic missiles and suicide drones that targeted the Crimean Peninsula as well as the regions of Belgorod and Krasnodar.
The attack began in the late hours of May 18 when Kiev forces launched a Soviet-made Tochka-U tactical ballistic missile at Belgorod. However, the missile was intercepted, according to a statement by the Russian Ministry of Defense.
In the early hours of May 19, the ministry reported the interception of several American-made MGM-140 ATACMS missiles and dozens of drones over Russian territory.
“On duty air defense systems destroyed nine ATACMS tactical missiles and one UAV [unmanned aerial vehicles] over the territory of the Republic of Crimea,” the ministry said in a statement. “Three UAVs were destroyed over the territory of the Belgorod region, 57 UAVs were destroyed and intercepted over the territory of the Krasnodar region,” the ministry reported.
Another drone launched by Kiev forces was intercepted over Belgorod later on in the, the ministry said in a separate statement.
Only light material losses were reported in Crimea and Belgorod. However, local officials in Krasnodar said that six drones crashed onto an oil refinery in Slavyansk. Later, the Interfax news agency said the refinery halted work after the drone attack.
Last week, Ukraine esclated attacks on Russian territory firing more than a dozen ballistic missile as well as more than one hundred aerial and seaborn suicide drones on targets Crimea and several other regions. Most of the projectiles were intercepted by Russian air defenses.
This escalation by Kiev forces comes on the backdrop of a series of defeats on the battlefield, mainly in the directions of Donetsk and Khakiv.
Russia will certainly respond to recent Ukrainian attacks. A massive missile and drone strike on military and energy infrastructure is the most likely scenario.
