Russia’s state corporation Rostec announced on February 9 that it has delivered a batch of updated Su-57 fifth-generation stealth fighter jets to the Russian Aerospace Forces.
In a statement, the cooperation said that the fighter jets, manufactured by its subsidiary United Aircraft Corporation (UAC), feature new weapon systems and avionics.
“To fulfill the targets set by the Russian Defense Ministry for the supply of highly sought-after weapons and military equipment to the troops, crews of the Russian Aerospace Forces have accepted the Su-57 aircraft in their new technical configuration. The aircraft has already proven itself during the special military operation. The new technical configuration will provide for the expansion of the range of missions for which this aircraft type is deployed. The advanced capabilities incorporated into the aircraft armament system make it possible to use new types of aircraft weapons,” the press service of Rostec quoted a Su-57 pilot of the Russian Aerospace Forces as saying.
The Su-57 is capable of aerial combat as well as ground and maritime strike. It incorporates stealth, supermaneuverability, supercruise, integrated avionics and large payload capacity.
The fighter jet’s avionics are built around two systems: the Sh-121 multifunctional integrated radio electronic system, MIRES, which integrates multiple active electronically scanned array radars, with a range of up to 400 kilometers, and electronic warfare means; as well as the 101KS “Atoll” electro-optical system, which incorporates targeting, early warning and jamming capabilities.
In addition, the fighter can carry a variety of advanced long-range weapons, including the R-37M air-to-air missile, the Kh-69 land-attack cruise missile, the Kh-58UShK anti-radiation missile and the Kh-35U anti-ship cruise missile.
“The fifth-generation Su-57 aircraft system is the best aircraft in its class, but we’re not resting on our laurels. The fighter has undergone a tremendous evolution and its improvement continues today – the aircraft’s weapons and systems capabilities are being upgraded. This fighter allows us to solve the most important tasks today, demonstrating efficiency and excellent maneuverability and combat capabilities,” UAC CEO Vadim Badekha said.
Rostec didn’t provide any details about the Su-57 upgrade. However, there was one notable change in one of the newly-delivered fighter jets that appeared in footage released by the cooperation.
The 101KS-U ultraviolet missile approach warning sensors, a part of the Atoll system, were completely redesigned. They became much larger with a visible second aperture, most likely an infrared imager. This upgrade could give the sensors the ability not just to provide early warning against threats like anti-aircraft missiles, but also to locate their launch points and track them. The upgrade could also enhance the imagery for cockpit displays and pilot night vision.
The new weapon systems and avionics are likely a part of the Su-57M upgrade, which reports from a few years ago said that it would enter production in the mid-2020s.
The upgrade will later include the NPO Saturn izdeliye 30, or AL-51F-1 engines, which will further improve the performance and stealthiness of the fighter jet.
