Russia Warned Israel Against Attacking Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant In Iran

Russia repeatedly warned Israel in recent weeks that it was risking a “major nuclear disaster” with its ongoing air strikes in close proximity to Iran’s Bushehr nuclear power plant, Israel’s Channel 12 reported on April 13.

Bushehr is the Islamic Republic’s only operating nuclear reactor. It was built by Russia’s state nuclear corporation Rosatom, which provides direct support to its operations.

Russian officials told Israel that its attacks were endangering Russian experts and civilians at the civilian power plant, according to Channel 12

The report also said that the Israeli military changed its operating procedures in the area where the nuclear power plant is located in response to the warning, clarified that it was unaware of the dangers, and said it had no intention of harming any Russian personnel.

Bushehr came under attack at least four times, with both Israel and the United States carrying out strikes near the nuclear power plant.

The last strike, which took place on April 4, claimed the life of an Iranian guard. Rafael Grossi, head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, wrote on X that no increase in radiation levels had been reported at the site, but voiced “deep concern” at the strike, which he said was the fourth such incident in recent weeks.

The Russian Foreign Ministry and the Russian embassy in Israel repeatedly warned Israeli officials of the dangers of the strikes, the report added.

“You are placing our people in danger,” a Kremlin official stressed in a message sent to an Israeli official, the report said. “This is a dangerous game that is likely to cause a major nuclear disaster, with grave implications for the Middle East. We call on you to stop.”

Israel responded to these warning by claiming that it was unaware of the dangers, and that it had changed its procedures, Channel 12 said.

Just before the release of the report, Rosatom chief Alexei Likhachev said that it was pulling nearly all of its personnel from Bushehr. The cooperation had planned an evacuation long before the ceasefire, removing about 600 personnel in several waves in March and earlier this month.

According to Likhachev, only 20 workers would stay behind in order to keep watch on the equipment at the nuclear power plant.

If Israel and the U.S. resume the war on Iran, Bushehr will be once again at risk. Even limited strikes threaten a catastrophic, region-wide radiological disaster.
