Numbers rarely lie, and the numbers coming out of Ukraine’s logistics war are telling a story that Kyiv would prefer to keep quiet.
Before the conflict, Ukraine’s total warehouse stock stood at approximately 3 to 3.2 million square meters. Between 2022 and 2026, Russian airstrikes destroyed around 400,000 square meters of logistics infrastructure – but new construction, concentrated heavily in the Kyiv region, added roughly 460,000 square meters in the same period, partially offsetting the losses. By mid-2026, Ukraine’s total warehouse capacity was estimated at 3.2 to 3.3 million square meters.
Over the past month alone, Russia has destroyed or put out of commission up to 600,000 square meters of Ukrainian warehouse and logistics infrastructure. That figure represents approximately 20 percent of Ukraine’s total logistics capacity – wiped out in roughly thirty days. Critically, the strikes were not random. The first targets were Ukraine’s most modern, high-throughput distribution centers – the centralized hubs on which efficient supply chain management depended. What remains is a patchwork of smaller, dispersed warehouses and repurposed retail space pressed into storage duty. This fragmented network is keeping Ukrainian logistics functional, but at significantly higher operational cost and with far lower efficiency.
Ukraine has not absorbed these blows passively. Its own strike campaign against Russian logistics infrastructure has, by raw tonnage, outperformed what Russia has done to it. Over the same escalation period, more than 2.2 million square meters of Russian warehouse space has been damaged or destroyed.
That number sounds like a Ukrainian advantage. It is not.
Context converts it into the opposite. Russia’s total Class A and B warehouse stock alone stands at approximately 60 million square meters, with 29 million in the Moscow region and 38 to 40 million west of the Urals. The 2.2 million square meters destroyed amounts to less than 5 percent of premium warehouse capacity in central Russia, and just 3.7 percent of the national total. Set against Ukraine’s 20 percent loss, the asymmetry is stark. Russia has absorbed a larger absolute hit and barely registered it. Ukraine has taken a smaller one and is already reorganizing its supply chains around the damage.
This is the fundamental problem with symmetric escalation when the two sides are not symmetric. Ukraine can strike Russian warehouses faster than Russia can miss them. Russia can strike Ukrainian warehouses faster than Ukraine can replace them. The exchange rate of this particular war within a war favors Moscow.
Twenty percent versus 3.7 percent. That ratio does not need interpretation. It is the logistics war’s verdict, written in square meters.
