Western technology is used in armed unmanned aerial vehicle (UAVs), that are attacking the Russian Hmeimim airbase in Syria on a regular basis, Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Oleg Syromolotov said on September 5.

“We are constantly registering the mass usage of this method to stage attacks on Russian bases in Syria. Meanwhile, the drones that are being used are not amateurish. Experts note … that Western specialists’ developments are being used,” Syromolotov said in his opening remarks at the second international conference on Countering Illicit Arms Trafficking in the Context of Fighting International Terrorism, according to Sputnik.

The senior Russian diplomat added that the UAV’s architecture is not improvised, revealing that Russian experts noted that ideas and technologies provided by Western specialists were used for their assembly.

Several armed UAVs launched from Greater Idlib attacked Hmeimim airbase two days ago, violating a recent ceasefire agreement. Russian air-defense systems deployed in the airbase managed to foil the attack.

Syrian sources believe that al-Qaeda-affiliated Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham is behind these UAVs. However, the terrorist group has not acknowledged this, so far.
